This week, guest blogger Bethan offered us some insight into her favourite healthy vending snacks. As a frequent runner (marathon number three planned for next year!) it is of vital importance what she fuels her body with. Here Bethan presents her top 5 healthy vending snacks, perfect to nibble on alongside keeping fit.
I’m Bethan, a keen runner and bit of a fitness geek! I love being outdoors getting the miles in or in the gym working on my strength. Exercise is pretty much how I spend most of my free time and living a healthy lifestyle is something that is very important to me. Especially with a marathon to run in April and getting married in May, living a healthy lifestyle at the moment is at the top of my priority list.
We all know that snacking and trying to keep fit do not always go hand in hand. And often the first thing to get ditched when starting a diet is the snacks. However, it does not have to be this way. There are so many brilliant healthy snacks out there to keep you going.
Healthy vending snacks are a bit of a lifesaver for me. I am constantly on the go. With working as a teacher and trying to fit in marathon training and a bit of wedding planning here and there, grabbing a snack on the go is one of the only ways that I manage to keep fueling my body. Therefore, it is very important to me that these snacks are going to give my body the boost that it needs. Don’t get me wrong, I love to grab a chocolate bar every now and again but they are not good running fuel at all. Cue feeling sick halfway round a run because you have eaten a chocolate bar on the way home from work!
There is actually a huge range of healthy vending snacks out there and Doozy offer so many delicious ones in their machines that it is hard to choose five faves! But here we go. After much deliberation, here are my top 5…
I have been eating Trek bars for ages! They taste great and always fill me up between meals. And as I have already mentioned I am an absolute sucker for chocolate so anything with a cocoa flavour always goes down well.
The Cocoa and Orange flavour is my absolute fav! The Protein Ball Co. is the perfect pick me up, especially after a run or a hard strength session. And they give you that all-important protein hit.
Especially the Smoked BBQ bag. Love Corn is so good that I could definitely go through a couple of bags in one go! They are a perfect replacement snack for a packet of crisps and actually, I think they taste so much better. I love to have a packet on my desk at work to nibble throughout the day!
The Dark Chocolate flavour is epic. Back to being a sucker for a bit of chocolate. But eating these rice cakes never feels like I am being naughty. Just gives me that chocolate hit without ruining all of my hard work out running the miles or building muscle in the gym.
Magnificent Mango is where it’s at. Who doesn’t love a bit of mango, but it’s always such an effort eating a fresh mango or expensive to buy pre-prepared from a supermarket. Urban Fruit has made it easy to get a mango fix on the go!
Obviously living a healthy lifestyle is an important factor of life for a lot of people. Being healthy and active has massive positives for us both physically and mentally but it can sometimes be hard to stick to healthy eating and find the motivation to get out there and be active every day.
For me, I find being active the easy part! I love being outdoors running the streets or on the trails but eating healthily is my downfall. I just love food. The introduction of healthy vending snacks does, however, make it much easier to avoid grabbing a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps on the go. There is so much variety out there, even the five products that I have chosen all have a range of different flavours to choose from.
I am not saying that I never have those ‘naughty’ kinds of food every now and again as life is definitely about balance. But I just limit those choices (usually to a weekend) and spend the weekdays making healthier choices when it comes to the food that I eat!
